I wanted to share the refreshed quality guidelines with you. These have been developed over the last months based on feedback of the community regarding more transparency and less ambiguity.

Key call outs:

• The quality guidelines have 3 main pillars:
• Visuals (technical for audio): This pillar entails all technical and compositional requirements.
• Usability: This pillar includes requirements that determine how usable and relevant an upload is. While an upload might not be rejected because of low usability, it will likely have an impact on its quality rating.
• Suitability: This pillar is focused on appropriate and inappropriate content.
• With precise guidance on "suitability” we will overall be stricter around this pillar.
• The guidelines are only available in English

In addition to the new guidelines we're launching a few new features:

• New quality status "outstanding”: We will introduce an additional quality review status "outstanding” (see below for more details)
• New status "published by community”: We will have a new status "published by community” which indicates when the media has gone through community voting and has been classified as "published" by the majority of the voters
  
• New "reassess my media" functionality: This functionality will give you the opportunity to request a reassessment from our quality reviewers. which will be available from your "my media" page
• New "AI generated” checkbox: A checkbox which has to be selected upon upload for "AI generated" media.

New status "outstanding”

The community often asked for more transparency and granularity around the quality of content which is why we will introduce a new content status called outstanding.

The "Outstanding" status is a step above the "Featured" statuses and is reserved for content that is particularly noteworthy and of the highest quality. We hope this new status will help to reward creators/contributors/artistsfor their hard work and also help users easily identify the best content.

Will this status be applied retrospectively?

The status "outstanding” will be applied retrospectively to all content on the platform based on data in the backend.

Reassess my media functionality

We heard your feedback regarding incorrect quality review decisions and the lack of getting feedback around this. While we want to encourage everyone to use the dedicated threads (photography, videos, illustrations & GIFs, audio) on the forum to get feedback from other community members, you will now have the opportunity to request a reassessment from our quality review team. This is limited to 7 requests per week and only one request per upload. You won't be able to request reassessment for uploads that have been classified as "published by community”.

"AI generated” checkbox

Contributors are required to check this box for all AI uploads. It will automatically add the "AI generated” tag to the upload and make it easier for visitors to find the media they are looking for.
(We will also update our licence towards the end of the week).

It's a very big change at Pixabay to highlight every outstanding work with this new badge, from what I see, this is not yet implemented in all languages, as in Spanish it can be read in the new badge as pending, which can bring confusion to those who speak this language, anyway I hope this will be implemented in all languages in the next weeks.

Surely there is much room for improvement and the new Pixabay quality standards are a stepping stone to provide everyone with the highest possible quality in everything they see. We have to adapt to the new changes to stay relevant and stand out on our own merits. We will have the opportunity now to present our best work every day, it is a great challenge that lies ahead for everyone here in the community.

Hi @PatoLenin just wanted to clarify, the outstanding status appears as pending? We would like to know if the content is still in pending for review or it is already reviewed and already had a outstanding status but instead of showing the new status it appears as pending only?

The content has already been revised in my media and highlighted with the new badge. In English, it reads Outstanding and there is no problem. The problem is in the Spanish language that I have by default, it can be read as pending and this is absolutely a translation error, I hope you can correct it later.

So far I'm VERY happy with the two additional statuses! They provide so much more clarity!

It's also great to have a proper reassess button implemented! How long does reassessment usually take? The same as before?

One thing I think should be improved is the Outstanding icon. Especially when it's small, you can't really see the star, it just looks like a blob. Maybe make the star (or the whole icon) a bit larger so you can see it better?

Wait, found a bug. Rejected music tracks show that they're also Featured.😂

EDIT2:

There's also something wrong with the AI Generated checkmark. If you have more than one image loaded in, clicking the words will change the checkmark of the image above the current image. You have to click exactly on the checkmark for it to work. This issue doesn't affect the image at the top of the list. Here's a screen recording:

Mine is in no way meant to be constructive or non-constructive criticism, but just some perplexity arising from observing my media pages after the introduction of the new status "outstanding”.

Considering only my contributions in images, out of about 900 images present those with the "oustanding" badge are 698. Wow, how good I am! But, wait a minute... : the 336 images on the first 7 pages (the most recent ones) are ALL "outstanding" and the other 362 "outstanding" images are scattered over the remaining 12 pages (the oldest). And that is already strange. Then, looking closer at which images were promoted from featured to outstanding I see other oddities and glaring inconsistencies.
I do not want to bore you by describing the many cases that demonstrate these inconsistencies, but I would really like to be believed: they are absolutely objective evidence.

I have given an explanation for this situation, and I think it can be shared. From what Jess said, it seems that the retroactive choice of uploads deserving of the new badge was left to the reviewers and not to an algorithm. However good, willing and fast, how many years would it have taken two, three or five human beings to open, observe and scrupulously judge the hundreds of thousands (or millions...?) of media uploaded to the site? Really impossible!

So going back to my media page situation, I thought that only the most recent uploads were seriously checked, leaving the others to chance and a percentage value. If that's the case, it's all understandable considering that they wanted to introduce this new classification, that they wanted to make it retroactive and that they had to start. Surely from now on the choices will be more accurate (I hope...).

But my perplexity is another: are we really sure that the frustrations and requests for explanations as to why my beautiful picture is published and not featured will now be added to the frustrations and requests for explanations as to why my beautiful picture is featured and not outstanding? I seem to have already read something in this thread that does not bode well...

Currently the AI checkbox seems to be automatically selected for any kind of media if you upload several media items at the same time. The engineering team is looking into it, so hopefully this will be resolved soon.

Older images did not receive the Outstanding badge randomly or by an algorithm. The Outstanding badge changed nothing in the back end. This has always existed. It's just that now the uploaders can see it.

Previous to this update the admins could see on each image a small box that showed whether the image was low quality or not (obviously on images that where Featured). This really only effected how high your image showed in search. It was there difference between Latest and Upcoming (remember?). Now, the uploaders have access to this information in the form of the Outstanding badge. So this "Outstanding" badge has been around since the beginning of Pixabay, it just wasn't implemented in a way that the artists could see it.

So if all your newer images are Outstanding, then your content must be getting even better!😊

It is true that this might make users ask why their image was only Featured and not Outstanding, however, with any improvement, there will always be problems that come along with it. But being Featured is nothing to sneeze at! It's still just as difficult to get as it was before.

I think that this comment is relevant to this thread.....

We are all talking about quality and uploading after all.

It would be useful if at uploading the type of media was nominated by the uploader.

ie. for me illustration versus photo. This could always be changed at quality review.

The reason I suggest this is that I have a series of flowers all very similar in concept but some have been put in photos and some in illustrations.

Similarly I have a series of blue studios and again some have been put in photos and some in illustrations.

Why when uploading png files, they are automatically tagged as ai generated.

Until Pixabay fixes the "ai generated" error, everyone can help themselves:
After uploading, go to where you can change your tag (my media, edit tags) and delete the tag "ai generated" again.
Of course, this applies to all types of images that are not AI generated.
